Nucor’s evolution has included many acquisitions, expansion, and vertical integration of raw material sourcing and downstream processing. Nucor continues to invest in new technologies, but has had questionable results such as with their $750mm direct-reduced iron facility in Louisiana. Although the company remains committed to its vision, it remains to be seen whether they can maintain their competitive edge in the face of adoption of their best practices by competitors and a surge in international imports of steel from China.
On the heels of bankruptcy in the 1960s, Nucor Corporation divested itself of many of its businesses and shifted its focus to its profitable steel joist business. In 1968, recently appointed CEO Ken Iverson made a radical decision to invest in radical steel-making technology from Europe called the electric arc furnace (EAF). Traditional steelmaking had relied upon the Bessemer process in which iron ore reacted with oxygen from atmospheric air – a time consuming process that was costly to start up or shut down. In contrast, the EAF melts recycled scrap metal using massive quantities of direct and alternating current electricity passed through huge graphite electrodes. At the time, electricity was relatively cheap and scrap metal was a fraction of the cost of iron ore as a raw material.
Once hired, employees will enroll in a months-long program created by Nucor at Polk State Corporate College in Bartow to learn specialized new jobs. “All of that is still on schedule, and we will start hiring entry-level production teammates in the first quarter” of 2020, Wilcox says. “It’s still the plan.”

The steel tariff, enacted by the Trump administration in March 2018, put a 25 percent tariff on imported steel, with exceptions for some countries. The world steel industry is in chronic oversupply due to two decades of intensive, government-subsidized investment in steel production in China. China now produces 55 percent of the world’s steel (ten times as much steel as the US produces). It’s estimated that on top of that over-production, China has additional excess capacity worth 400 million tons a year. The market overhang has led to high levels of steel imports into the US and chronic weakness in US steel prices. The price weakness has made it difficult for the steel industry to invest and maintain production.

Senior executives’ salaries do not match industry averages, too. And they only receive annual bonus paid partly in cash (40%) and in stock (60%). Its size depends on how much of shareholders’ equity returns above predetermined minimum rate. Thanks to such system, rewards can increase multi-fold in relation to the base salary.
